So, after purchasing my new to me 1990 Yamaha SuperJet w/lots of modifications including engine work
I needed to re-work the hood air tubes because the dual carbs do not allow for the tube to work, and someone had removed the other tube as well. So, without tubes the water splashed right ON TOP the carb and woud cause some serious water ingestion problems.
This modification is super easy and can be done in under one hour.
We will be drilling a new hole, blocking the old hood vent hole, and installing the new tube.
Tools needed for modification:
- 1.5″ ID Flex tube from home depot. The length depends how far you want it to go into the ski.
- 1.5″ Hole Saw
- Drill, any drill will work it’s like cutting butter.
- Epoxy or 3M 5200 fast cure (what I used)
- Spray paint can top.
- Scissors
- Super Glue (if you want for glueing spray paint cap)
- Sand Paper
- Windex, Carb Cleaner, Paint Remover, anything to clean up the area to be glued.
Let’s get started.
- If required cut a half-inch or an inch off the spray paint can top so that it doesn’t hang to low and touch your carb.

- Take sandpaper and scrape up the hood hole you plan to cover with the spray paint top. We do this so the glue, epoxy, or 5200 will have something to grab onto
.
- Add adhesive of choice to inside of spray paint can lid, and jam it over the hole. It will fit super snug.
- Drill hole where breather tube will fit and not dump water on sensitive areas.

- Sand around the hole, inside, etc so the adhesive you choose has something to grip.
- Cover the outside of the tube with adhesive of choice. I used 3M 5200 fast cure, and twist into hole approx 3 blue lines. This way it’s not flush so water can’t just drip in if it’s a small amount of water. Also it provides a good GRIP for the tube onto the hood.

- Use somethig to hold the tube up so it drys properly.

Optionally you can use a fan to make it dry quicker, I wanted to use it in 10 hours so I used a fan to speed up the drying process.
